Author and composer,  Dr. Quentin McGhee writes:
"In 1980 I memorized the gospel of Matthew, thought for thought. Years later, it was a source of strength to me in an unexpected way. 1987 was a stormy year. I was still grieving from the death of my parents, who were 57 and 61. They both died of cancer within a period of 3 months. Meanwhile, amoebas robbed me of 30 pounds. Sleep refused to befriend me for a period of 9 months. I found  myself in a great depression, often crying, and too weak to work. The thing I dreaded most each day was the sunset. Sometimes it seems like the only thing longer than a sleepless night is the next night. Having visited the best doctors in the world, I felt abandoned by God–a missionary in Africa, in a prison of confusion.
And yet this terrible year of sickness, sadness, weakness and darkness proved to be the best year of my life. For in those sleepless hours, I meditated on Matthew, night after night, to control my thoughts that were swirling like bees in my head. One day, I was shuffling across the room, pondering a passage in Matthew, when an unknown melody came to me. I was so tired of quoting Matthew, day after day, that I decided to try to write a song, using the thoughts from a chapter in Matthew, and the new melody that was playing “far away in the depths of my spirit.” As I wrote the song and sang it, for the first time in months, I felt the strange emotion of joy, and worshipped the Lord through that song for an hour or more. When I moved on  to the next chapter in Matthew, another melody came to me, and I wrote another song.  And so it was, that in the bottom of that canyon or depression, I discovered a small spring that bubbled forth music. From that time on, I find that whenever I meditate on a chapter of Scripture, musical impressions come to me.
Today, 20 years after the first song, I find it easy to think through most books of the New Testament, using the songs as a guide. It is amazing the way melody aids memory. We do not get the words to the song “Amazing Grace” mixed up with the words of “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” And the melody of each chapter in this album, will cause the thoughts of a chapter to dance in your mind and spirit. Music turns work to play, and makes Scripture meditation  a delight.
There are many ways these songs could be improved, and I hope to revise them some day, and offer them on DVD.  I have little, formal musical training.  Nevertheless, may this music remind us of the verse:

“From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise” (Matt. 21:16)."
